My dad's a straight-up simple guy. Whenever July 24th rolled around, he always preferred to cook his own handa, invite a few of his closest friends over for some drinks, and crank up the stereo to his favorite tunes (Eagles, Bread, Bee Gees). To him, as long as he got his family by his side and food on the table, he's set.
For his 60th birthday, I wanted to welcome his senior years with something more than the usual festivities at home. I wanted to contribute a fond remembrance to his memory bank. So with the help of my mom, I secretly booked a return ticket for him to come spend time with me in Singapore.
I broke the happy surprise to him in a phone call, a day before his scheduled flight and birthday. Looking back from that conversation, my heart smiles every time I replay each warm second of it. Props to my mom who filmed our entire convo with her laggy BlackBerry 8250!
Here's a video montage of my father's first time at the Little Red Dot last July 24, 2014. This is how I will always remember him: Smiling with childlike wonder at every new thing he sees, laughing at my/his jokes, and patting his belly with satisfaction after a hearty meal. Good, no, great times!
Papa, we've celebrated your birthday tons of times together but this—your 60th with me—will always be my favorite. It's special beyond words and most importantly, ours. Forever grateful and glad I caught it on tape.
Happy 62nd, Pa! Missing you everyday, as usual.
